Gutuater
|
Gaulish term meaning "voice-father" (or "father of invocation," i.e., "invoker"). It refers to a class of religious functionaries among the Gauls. Caesar seems to have used the title as a proper name, and mentions someone called Gutuater as taking part at the meeting in the Forest of the Carnutes, at which meeting those present voted for Gaulish resistance against Roman incursions. Although Caesar assumes this was a personal name (and the person in question was later captured and executed by the Romans), nevertheless, the title "Gutuatros" is found in some Gallo-Roman inscriptions, suggesting that it was title and not personal name. |
